The Children Who Witness Abuse Counselling program (CWWA), a program of OPTIONS Surrey Community Services Society, employs a structured psycho-educational model with the objectives of helping children and youth to define violence, express feelings, improve communication, learn problem-solving and coping skills, increase self-esteem, develop social support networks, and develop safety plans.
We are looking for practicum students or volunteers (unpaid, union exempt) who have experience working with children who have been exposed to domestic violence, to co-facilitate psycho-educational groups. We are also looking for an individual who can co-facilitate a parenting group for parents whose children have experienced abuse.
Groups are teamed according to age, and each group will meet for the duration of the summer once a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays; 10:00-3:30 p.m.) for 5 weeks, beginning the last week of June 2009. Another group will begin at the beginning of August. The parenting group will be every Wednesday from 10:00-12:00. Co-facilitators can choose the number of groups they would like to work but would need to be available from approximately 9:00-4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 9:00-1:30 on Wednesdays.
For practicum students needing to fill a greater number of hours, we also will run groups next semester. In addition, we offer community and school presentations as well as provide psycho-educational counselling for school-based groups. You can visit our website at www.options.bc.ca.
