Abusers are Turning the Tables

Dec 7, 2017

They arrested her and took her away, leaving her young children with him. She tried to tell them what was going on, that she was scared to leave her kids with him because he had gotten blackout drunk before, but given his knife wound, she was taken to jail.

It took her several days to prove that her husband’s cut was self-inflicted, and she was only allowed to go back to her children once she had done that.

Another client suffered physical abuse at the hands of her husband as well as verbal abuse by her in-laws. When she threatened to phone the police, he called first and told them she was threatening to kill herself. He then told her that the police here were like the police in their native country…”They are going to rape you and take you away!” The police came, but because she didn’t speak the language, they spoke to her husband and in-laws who spoke English, but not to her.

When the police tried to take her away, she fought with all of her strength, believing her husband’s warning. She was arrested for resisting arrest. She spent 13 hours in holding before her own immediate family was able to arrange for a lawyer and took her to their home. Charges were dropped once they were able to fully explain what happened.
